Getting Married in Sydney: The Legal Steps to Know Before Your Wedding

Planning your wedding is an exciting time, but before you get to the ceremony, there are a few important legal requirements to take care of.

As a Sydney marriage celebrant, I help couples understand the legal wedding requirements and prepare for their wedding day, whether they are planning a simple legal marriage or a personalised ceremony with family and friends.

Start With the Notice of Intended Marriage

One of the first steps is completing a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM). This form must be given to an authorised marriage celebrant at least one calendar month before your wedding and can generally be lodged up to 18 months in advance.

I recommend contacting your celebrant early so you have plenty of time to organise your documents and discuss your plans.

What Documents Do You Need?

You will need documents to confirm your identity, date and place of birth, and current marital status. Depending on your circumstances, these may include an Australian or overseas passport, or an Australian birth certificate and photo identification.

If either of you has been married before, you will also need evidence that the previous marriage has legally ended.

Your celebrant can explain which documents you need and help you understand the steps involved.

Choose a Ceremony That Suits You

Getting married doesn't have to mean organising a large wedding. Some couples prefer a simple legal ceremony with just two witnesses, while others want a personalised celebration with family, friends, readings, cultural traditions and their own vows.

As a civil marriage celebrant, I can help you choose an approach that suits your wishes, your budget and the way you want to celebrate your marriage.

You can marry at a venue of your choice, with options for different styles and sizes of weddings throughout Sydney and NSW.

Make Your Wedding Planning Easier

Taking care of the legal requirements early gives you more time to enjoy planning your ceremony. Whether you are considering a small, intimate wedding or a larger celebration, understanding the process from the beginning can make everything easier.

You can read more about the legal requirements for getting married in Australia before deciding how you would like your wedding day to unfold.

I'm Orna Binder, an authorised civil marriage celebrant with over 20 years of experience. I help couples throughout Sydney and NSW prepare for their marriage and create ceremonies that feel personal and meaningful.

Why Your Wedding Ceremony Should Tell Your Story

When people think about wedding planning, they often focus on the venue, flowers, photography, dress and reception.

But the ceremony is the moment when two people actually get married.

That is why I believe a personalised wedding ceremony can make such a difference. It gives you the opportunity to share something about who you are as a couple and make your ceremony feel genuinely yours.

Your Relationship Is Unique

Every couple has a different story.

Perhaps you met through friends, online, at work or completely by chance. Maybe you've been together for many years, built a family together, travelled the world or supported each other through difficult times before deciding to get married.

Those details are what make your relationship unique.

A personalised wedding ceremony gives you the opportunity to include some of those memories rather than simply listening to a generic wedding script.

What Can Be Included in a Personalised Wedding Ceremony?

As a marriage celebrant, I can work with you to create a ceremony that reflects your personality, relationship and the way you want to celebrate your marriage.

Depending on what you feel comfortable sharing, your ceremony might include:

  • How you first met

  • Favourite memories you've shared

  • What you admire about each other

  • Your children, family and friends

  • Personal readings or poems

  • Music that has meaning to you

  • Personal vows

  • Promises you want to make to each other

  • A little humour or a funny story

Not everything has to be serious. A little laughter can make a wedding ceremony feel natural and reflect your personalities.

A Personalised Ceremony Doesn't Have to Be Long

Personalised doesn't mean complicated.

A couple who wants a short and simple ceremony can still have something meaningful and personal.

Likewise, couples who want to share more of their story can create a longer ceremony with additional readings, music, stories, rituals or participation from family and friends.

The important thing is that the ceremony feels right for you.

As your celebrant, my role is to bring those different elements together while making sure the legal requirements of your marriage are fulfilled.

Creating a Ceremony That Feels Like You

The best wedding ceremonies don't necessarily follow a particular formula.

They reflect the couple.

Whether you're planning a large wedding with family and friends, an intimate celebration or a simple ceremony, taking the time to create something personal can make the moment you say "I do" even more memorable.

As an experienced Sydney marriage celebrant, I've conducted more than 1,000 weddings since 2006. I take the time to get to know each couple and create a ceremony that reflects their relationship, rather than using a generic or recycled script.

Your wedding ceremony is about more than the legal words. It's the moment you stand together and make your promises to one another.

Because your love story is unique — and your ceremony should be too. ❤️
